THE OBSESSION OF ANGELS

I understand the obsession of angels

singing in their desperate cage

and know the pleasures devils take

between the jubilation and the rage.

I know the angels fear escape

when women roam in the half-lit town

asking the moon to help them sleep

with anyone their heart would own.

The angels fiddle at their desks

inputting data on oblique machines

recounting sins of make believe

and fantasies of might have been.

When dawn returns the angels rest

translucent wings against the wire

while devils dance a rooftop jig

fresh with acts of fulfilled desire.
